Interview with Megan Franken
How is the idea of activism apparent in your art?
I like to think that my art expresses activism in two ways. First of all, through the words I put on clothing (I like to choose phrases which encourage environmental activism, such as "Live in Harmony", or "Embrace Nature"). Also, less obviously, through the way each item is made. I call it "authentically environmental" because each and every step must be respectful to the earth.
Do you think political and environmental issues can be effectively addressed through art?
Definitely. Art often allows people to express their ideas with more clarity than words, especially when it comes to expansive, multisided issues like environmentalism. Samuel Beckett said that ignorance was incompatable with art, and I completely agree.

Which artists do you admire who have an activist agenda?
It might sound cheesy, but the answer is my friends. I have an amazing group of friends who are changing the world with music, art, theatre, and food (which I definitely consider an art form). I find I'm more convinced by their art than their arguments, which supports what I was saying in the last question.
Tell us something about your process of creating.
When I'm at a loss for what to "write" on my clothing, I like to flip through poetry, manifestos and political texts and write down everything that catches my eye. I always manage to find something that moves me.
What is the name of your Etsy shop?
